Old Royal Naval College

365Tickets

The Old Royal Naval College is the centerpiece of Maritime Greenwich.

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, this magnificent twin domed Baroque building is one of the most famous landmarks of London’s south bank, and is home to the impressive Painted Hall, which has been described as “the Sistine Chapel of the UK”.

The paintings, are rich in symbols of religion, monarchy, maritime power, navigation and trade, and the 5683 sq ft ceiling painting is the largest in the country.

The neoclassical chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul is one of the finest C18 interiors in the UK, with naval motifs throughout, and is still in use today.

The ORNC was built as a hospital for Navy veterans, on the site of a Tudor Palace, and became a training college for naval officers.

To find out more about its former uses, see the Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre.
