Discover the rich heritage and great things to see and do in the ancient walled city of York.  Situated at the coming together of the Rivers Ouse and Foss, York is a city full of exquisite architecture and picturesque cobbled streets.

The city, with a rich heritage of over 2000 years ,was first founded by the Romans and offers a wealth of historic attractions including the majestic cathedral York Minster, the York Dungeons, Clifford’s Tower and remnants of Viking settlements such as the Jorvik Viking Centre.  Take an amble down The Shambles, a street with an interesting past which dates back to Medieval times.

Why not discover what there is to see in York by taking a guided bus tour, you can even take a Ghost Bus Tour if you are brave enough!  Alternatively take to the River Ouse and take in the city from the peace of a river cruise. There are so many great ways to discover why York is one of the UK’s most important heritage towns.

There is something for everyone in York whether you enjoy the outdoors or museums.  Why not try a visit to the York Castle Museum, the National Railway Museum or the Yorkshire Air Museum.  And if you have a sweet tooth visit York’s Chocolate Story Museum and discover the history of chocolate.

If history is your thing why not stroll along the 2000 year old York City Walls, visit the Treasurer’s House or Castle Howard.

For the children why not become an archeologist at DIG or visit Piglets Adventure Farm or Beetle Bank Open Farm and see all of the farm animals or visit the wild animals of Askham Bryan Wildlife & Conservation Park.

There are many places that can be visited in a day from York.  Why not visit the seaside town of Whitby and see the Steam Trains or enjoy a tour of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales with their picturesque towns and villages.  Even the Lake District is a day trip from York as is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire, just outside Bradford. And with other cities close to hand, such as Durham, Sheffield and Leeds, York is certainly well situated to be a starting point for many trips.
